How long is a counselling session?

• Sessions are 60 minutes in duration unless otherwise agreed upon beforehand.

How much will a session cost?

• Counselling sessions are R650 an hour.

How many sessions will be required?

• The counselling journey will look different for each individual. The length of the counselling journey can be discussed with the counsellor before commencement and looked at again throughout the process. Ideally, counselling will take place weekly, or fortnightly, for 2 to 3 months.

Will anyone find out about what is said during my counselling sessions?

• Counselling is a confidential service where confidentiality will only be broken under the circumstances that the counsellor is concerned that the client is at risk of harming themselves or others. Under these circumstances, the counsellor will make the client aware that they will have to contact other professionals for further intervention as well as a person the client will choose before the counselling process begins as their ‘in case of emergency contact’.

Which professional is right for me? A counsellor, psychologist, psychiatrist, or life coach?

• Unsure of who to contact? Registered counsellors form the first level of mental health care in South Africa, providing interventions when necessary, and working within a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers where they can refer clients to the appropriate professional should any serious psychological concerns be present.
